Sai herbals

All-Natural Herbs used in our formulas

Below is a list, in alphabedical order, of the herbs that have been used in various Sai Herbals formulas. The experts of Ayurveda do not recommend the use of single herbs for self-care due to several important reasons:

  1. Single herbs may not be effective to overcome most health conditions.
  2. Herbs in formula combination are much more powerful and effective.
  3. Good formulas address all co-factors to a health goal for much greater effectiveness.
  4. Expert combinations include herbs that increase assimilation and effective potency of the other ingredients and create a balanced effect, which makes it harmonious to the body.
  5. Herbs have different effects according to dose, and when mixed with other herbs.

Bitter melon contains a unique phyto-constituent that has been confirmed to have a hypoglycemic effect called charantin.  There is also another insulin-like compound known as polypeptide P which has been suggested as insulin replacement in some diabetic patients.

Researchers at Saint Louis University claim that an extract from bitter melon, commonly eaten and known as karela in India, causes a chain of events which helps to kill breast cancer cells and prevents them from multiplying.

Bitter gourd has many nutritional benefits. It is very low in calories but dense with precious nutrients.  It is an excellent source of vitamins B1, B2, and B3, C, magnesium, folic acid, zinc, phosphorus, manganese, and has high dietary fiber.  It is rich in iron, contains twice the beta-carotene of broccoli, twice the calcium of spinach, and twice the potassium of a banana.

Karela is also known to have healing effects on blood disorders, low energy, eye problems, hangover, liver problems, weak immune system, piles, psoriasis, and toxemia.*

Hindi/Sanskrit Name:          Triphala (Amla + Haritaki + Bibhitaki)
Latin Name:                        Phyllanthus embilica + Terminalia chebula + Terminalia bellirica
English Name:                    Indian gooseberry + Chebulic myrobalan + Belleric myrobalan

In a survey conducted worldwide, Triphala was considered the best colon cleanser in the world. Triphala is a mixture of three herbs in equal ratios, namely Amla, Haritaki and Bibhitaki. All three herbs in Triphala are laxative in nature and very beneficial in removing toxins. Colon cleansing is an ancient and proven practice for rejuvenating the body. Colon cleansing helps detoxify and clean decayed food residues and other toxic substances accumulated in the intestine walls. This not only gets rid of constipation, hemorrhoids, parasites, flatulence, acne, bad breath and foul body but also prevents colon cancer. Colon cleansing also helps to relieve headaches, irritability, and depression.

Triphala, formulated by Ayurvedic physicians thousands of years ago and used by literally billions of people since, is considered the most effective and safest laxative and colon tonic by most health care practitioners. It improves the absorption of food in intestines especially in the duodenum where most chemical digestion takes place. Triphala also helps to stimulate various gastric enzymes that help to convert complex food into a more easily digestible form. More over, Triphala stimulates the peristaltic action of the intestinal lining (due to its anthroquinones and other bitters) that also aids in proper movement of food at various levels of the digestive tract. It is also helpful in making the stool loose thereby facilitating the easy evacuation of the bowel. While Triphala is somewhat laxative to many people due to the anthoquinones, the balance of tannins naturally present has a toning effect.

In vitro studies have also shown that triphala is lethal to a variety of gastrointestinal pathogens, including bacteria such as Salmonella typhii, Shigella, Klebsiella and Pseudomonas, and fungi like Candida albicans.
A comparative study of the efficacy of Emblica officinalis (Indian gooseberry/ Amla) fruit powder with a conventional antacid formulation was performed. In a 4 week study, 38 patients with dyspepsia and with or without stomach ulcer were divided into two groups. One group received the fruit powder and the other, the antacid. Emblica was used at the level of 3 gm per dose, three times a day while gel antacid was used at 30 ml per dose, up to 6 times a day. The improvement in the clinical symptoms score (belching, fullness, heartburn, regurgitation, nausea and vomiting) in ulcer dyspeptics was from the initial 4.2 to 0.4 (p < 0.01) post treatment score for antacid group, and 4.6 to 0.6 (p<0.05) for the Emblica group. Endoscopic examination showed all ulcers in the antacid group in the process of healing, while all but one patient in Emblica group had completely healed ulcers. In the non-ulcer group both antacid and Emblica produced a significant decrease in clinical symptoms score from 4.4 to 1.53 (p<0.01) and 5.0 to 1.61 (p<0.01) respectively.

Triphala's benefits for the digestive system make it a very useful herbal medicine for treating Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) and Ulcerative Colitis. One recent molecular finding supports Triphala's traditional use in treating obesity. Both overeating and obesity disrupt digestion and overburden the gastrointestinal tract, including the liver and bowel. As a result, digestion is compromised, leading to poor nutrient assimilation, imbalance and overgrowth in the intestinal microflora, and rotting of ill-digested food. For such conditions, triphala can be highly effective in removing stagnation of both the liver and intestines.

Triphala is also known to be effective for Blood Purification, Blood Circulation and Blood pressure. Triphala's strong affinity for micro-organisms prevents them from causing damage in the body and renders them inactive. This astringent property of Triphala helps in purification of blood and also helps in maintaining the proper density of the blood. Hence it is very helpful in eradicating all blood borne diseases and also skin related problems. Triphala reduces the serum cholesterol, and high blood pressure. It significantly improves functioning of the liver as well as blood circulation. In addition, it has the ability to exert a remarkable protection against cardiovascular diseases. Triphala reduces the plaque formation in the arteries, thereby reducing the risk of heart related problems caused due to arteriosclerosis.

Triphala has powerful anti-oxidant agents that help in regularizing the metabolism of cells and ease their proper functioning. This reduces the risk of production of free radicals that are the main cause of aging. It also stimulates the functioning of cell organelles like mitochondria, golgi bodies and nucleus that play a vital role in proper functioning of the cell. Recent studies have shown Triphala to be an anti-cancer agent. It has the ability to kill tumor cells while sparing normal ones.

Triphala is very effective in treating diabetes mellitus and it helps in stimulating the pancreas. Pancreas contains islet of langerhans that secretes insulin. Insulin is responsible for maintaining the proper glucose level in the body. In a study conducted by the American Botanical Council, it was shown that Triphala greatly reduced blood glucose levels in diabetic rats. The study concluded that the mechanism of action of these extracts for lowering blood glucose is not known, but they may decrease the effect of inflammatory cytokine release in diabetics, which in turn might reduce insulin resistance. Triphala is also useful for all eye diseases including the treatment of conjunctivitis, progressive myopia, the early stages of glaucoma and cataracts. *

Hindi/Sanskrit Name:          Vathada
Latin Name:                        Prunus amygdalus
English Name:                    Almond

Almonds, also known in Ayurveda as Vathada, have 90% unsaturated fats, and are high in protein, fiber, calcium, magnesium, potassium, folic acid, vitamin B & E, and other antioxidants. Almonds help prevent osteoporosis and are known to regulate blood pressure and sugar levels. They also lower stress levels, reduce the risk of heart attacks and also help in Alzheimer’s disease. Regular consumption of almonds maintains the health of the skin and hair as well.

Almonds contain some important phytochemicals such as sphingolipid, beta-sitosterol, daucosterol, uridine, and adenosine. Almonds also contain a protein called amandin which is a legumin type protein.  Almonds have been found to have a consistent low-density lipoprotein-cholesterol (LDL-C) lowering effect in healthy individuals, and in individuals with high cholesterol and diabetes, in both controlled and free-living settings. Biologically active by nature, these nutrients target primary mechanistic routes of LDL-C reduction, including decreased (re)absorption of cholesterol and bile acid, increased bile acid and cholesterol excretion, and increased LDL-C receptor activity.

In a study, researchers fed 38 human subjects with high cholesterol profiles with heart- healthy diets including 100g of one of three forms of almonds: roasted salted almonds, roasted almond butter or raw almonds for four weeks. They found that all forms of almonds in the context of a heart-healthy diet significantly lowered low-density Lipoprotein - cholesterol (LDL) from baseline to the completion of the study. Both raw and roasted almonds significantly lowered triglyceride levels. Researchers supplied 22 healthy subjects with either whole almonds or almond oil for 6-week periods. They found that fat replacement with whole almonds and almond oil resulted in a 54% increase in percentage of energy.

Almond oil has long been used in complementary medicine circles for its numerous health benefits. In addition to the benefits discussed before, almond oil may also improve bowel transit. The reference states a reduced incidence of colonic cancer. Historically, almond oil had been used to treat dry skin conditions such as psoriasis and eczema. Almond oil seemingly reduces hypertrophic scarring post-operatively, smoothes and rejuvenates skin. Almond oil has emollient and sclerosant properties and, therefore, has been used to improve complexion and skin tone.*
